Emperor Franz Joseph’s study in the Gödöllő Royal Palace

You enter the palace from the leafy Ady Endre sétany, up the winged steps that lead to the white entrance peppered with the odd bit of gold leaf. The ticket office is on the right. Once you’ve got your ticket, take the main stairs up to see the permanent collection. You walk through the old apartments once belonging to Franz Joseph and Sisi, a network of 23 colorful rooms, each decorated in different colors of damask, velvet, and silk, some in royal crimson and others in shades of lavender. Keep an eye out for a few curiosities, such as the large bear on the floor of Emperor Franz Joseph’s study, the colorful ceramic stove featuring fruit and pastoral scenes in his reception rooms next door, and the pink marble-clad room where Empress Maria Theresia stayed in 1751.
