Australia is isolated from the rest of the world by vast oceans, and even within the continent, distances can make communication a challenge. The original inhabitants of this vast land, the Aborigines, had complex ways of communicating. There were originally around 250 indigenous languages, but most have disappeared. Great distances and sparse populations meant that most communities never had the opportunity to meet or talk to one another. The distinctive Aboriginal visual art was also a means of communication; the myriad symbols have meaning and convey a message, perhaps about the history of the community, a special event, or specific useful information such as good hunting areas or the location of water. The Europeans brought their own means of communication, and by 1854 there was a telegraph line from Melbourne to Williamstown. It was just 20 kilometers long, but it was a feat that paved the way to further advancement.
Today, you can generally expect top-level telephone, Internet, and television services that are thoughtfully provided even in remote areas, although service bundles can be confusing and sometimes not well constructed. Increasingly you can get personally configured packaged products to suit your needs. Phones, computers, and other electronic devices are expensive here, and customer service will feel slow and unresponsive for anyone used to the American way of doing things. It pays to shop around, as many companies offer similar services at different rates; competition can be fierce and deals can be found. If you are renting your housing, your landlord may have an existing deal for some or all of these services, but you can ask to change companies if another suits you better.
