Pinellas County is easily accessible from major interstate highways along the Midwest (I-75) and Northeast (I-95) corridors, as well as from Orlando (I-4). I-275 serves the western portions of the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, including downtown Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Bradenton. It starts in the south at I-75 in Bradenton and extends up through St. Petersburg and Tampa, connected by two major bridges, the Sunshine Skyway in the south and Howard Frankland to the north, before reuniting with I-75 at Lutz. I-75, by contrast, skirts both cities and acts as a bypass to southwest Florida and the Gulf Coast.
Once in Pinellas County, Clearwater is in the north along the Gulf, St. Petersburg is in the south along the bay. To reach St. Petersburg from Clearwater, head south on U.S. 19A, a slow, densely trafficked mess. Farther east, the regular U.S. 19 cuts down through the center of the peninsula to St. Petersburg.
In St. Petersburg, streets are set up in a grid pattern, with avenues running east-west and streets running north-south. Central Avenue divides north and south St. Petersburg, with the numbered avenues on either side—it’s tricky, though, as to the left of Central there’s 1st Avenue North, to the right it’s 1st Avenue South. There are some sections of town that are all one-way streets, so you may make a lot of turns while driving.
From St. Pete Beach all the way up through Clearwater, all you need to know is that Gulf Boulevard (Hwy. 699) runs right up the coast and through each little town. The city of Clearwater is on the mainland, but Clearwater Beach is on a barrier island connected by Memorial Causeway.
