I stretched up to lick her tears and tried to bark out an answer, but she was squirminâ hard to break free and wasnât reading me. And since I know how awful beinâ trapped and muzzled can feel, I gave up tryinâ to assure her and got to work on freeing her hands.
Not to brag or anything, but Iâm a nip ânâ gnaw expert. And since the zip tie around Jadaâs wrists was nothing compared with a rope or a leash, I peeled back my lips and got down to business.
âThat tickles!â Jada cried.
They donât call me Mr. Whiskers for nothing! Heh-heh.
I kept on nippinâ, and just as her hands snapped free, Misty and Zelda came scurryinâ in on a gust of whispers.
They stopped dead in their tracks. âMr. Whiskers?â Misty gasped. âHow did youââ
âAuntie Jada?â Zelda cried, beelininâ toward us. âYouâre tied up?â
âOh, girls!â Jada said, rubbing her wrists. âWhere on earth have you been?â
Misty and Zelda looked at each other like they were holdinâ butter.
âUhâ¦,â Zelda said.
âWalking around town?â Misty said.
My eyebrow twitched at Misty. Sheâd just pulled a truth-and-dodgeâimprrrressive!
Then, while Zelda hurried to take off the belt around Jada, Misty grabbed some scissors and pulled a subject switcheroo. âWhy was the front door wide open?â she asked Jada as she cut the ties around her ankles.
âThey left in a big hurry,â Jada said, freeing one leg.
Zelda started to say, âThose fakeââ but Misty cut in, âWho did? And why are you even in our apartment?â
âCops! They had a search warrant! And badges!â Jada said. âBut they werenât actually cops!â
âSoâ¦what did they look like?â Zelda asked, playing dumb.
âLike cops!â Jada snapped. âOnce I caught on, I took pictures of them, but they grabbed my phone and tied me up.â She stood. âWhat do you know about some old gold coins your father has?â
It was Mistyâs turn to play dumb. âGold coins?â
âYes, gold coins. They tore the place apart looking for them.â
Misty and Zelda had a very heated but silent conversation while Jada was lookinâ away, and finally Zelda told Jada, âHe never mentioned any coins.â
Wow. Another truth-and-dodge!
âWell,â Jada said, âIâm afraidâ¦â But then her voice trailed off and her eyes went shifty.
âYouâre afraid what?â Misty demanded.
âThat your father really is in some deepâ¦in some big trouble.â
âNo kidding!â Zelda cried. âHeâs been kidnapped. And now youâve been tied up and our apartment has been ransacked! We need to call the police!â
âRight. Right,â Jada said, but there was something off about the way she said it.
Something foxy.
I wasnât the only one who caught that. Misty zeroed in like a pointer huntinâ quail. âYou did call them before, right? And they said they couldnât get involved, right?â
âOf course!â Jada said, but I could smell the lie in it.
So could Misty. âAuntie Jada! What is going on?â
âNever mind, child. Never mind.â Jada hurried toward the apartment door. âJust stay here. Just stay here and donât let anyone in. Iâm going to talk to Tiana right now, and weâll figure this out. Weâll figure it all out!â
When the door slammed closed, Zelda turned to Misty.
