“Sounds good to me. Will the rest of the kids be home by then?”

“I’m not sure what all they were going to do in town. I’ll find out, though.”

“Good deal.”

She went back in the house. We played until Gus got tired, and started slowing down. I sat on the porch, and he scrambled up into the other chair. He looked at me, and asked, “Can I have a beer, Dad?”

“Nope. Ask again in fifteen years or so.”

“Worth a try, wasn’t it?”

“I suppose. You didn’t think it was going to work, did you?”

“Nope, but I thought I could make you smile.”

“You say you’re in need of a vigorous scalp massage to stimulate your hair growth?”

“No, Dad, I did not ask for a Dutch rub.”

I laughed. “You’re getting pretty sharp, Little Man.”

“I have to be, to stay ahead of Becky.”

“There is that. She seems kinda quiet since we made it dirtside. Makes me wonder what she’s up to.”

“I told her it would. She never listens to me.”

“She’s your sister. You expected different results?”

“She knows I’m right, but she does silly things anyway.”

“Maybe she’s just trying to show you up. If you didn’t make a fuss about it, it wouldn’t be as much fun, would it?”

“Hmm…I don’t know, Dad. You might be right.”

“Something to think about, anyway.”

“What are you figuring to get done, while we’re here?”

“I don’t know that there’s anything we really need to do. I think I need to relax a little, but other than that, I can’t think of much that we need to take care of. Did you have something you wanted to do?”

“Not really. I was just hoping we could hang out. I don’t get to see you much, when you’re working.”

“I’m thinking we ought to be able to do that.”

We talked, and played with Snitz, ‘til Nikki said it was time to go to John’s. We went over, and I thought maybe the Boatmen would like to eat with us. John said he didn’t mind, so I pulled the car seats out of the Yukon, and headed to Boatmen House. The Gunny saw me coming up the drive, and met me out front. “What’s up, Boss?”

“Just wondered if you wanted to come to supper over at John’s.”

“Sounds good. I’ll get the rest of them.”

He called out to his people, and soon I had a truckload of Boatmen. I took them back to John’s. Greg met us when I pulled in. He said, “I wondered where you took off to, Uncle Bob.”

“I just thought these folks might want to eat with us.”

“They’re good folks. I got to talk to some of them last night.”

I got out of the truck, and started toward the house. Richard and Susie Collins pulled up before I made it. Susie looked like she was about to have her baby any time. Richard helped her out of the pickup, and grabbed a big box out of the back. He asked, “Do you know if Meat Bringer is going to be around tonight, Bob? We’ve got a big box of jerky for him.
