BOWYN had me pack up the laptop and take that and the Casaubon book down to our room, though I doubted Seth would have approved of its removal from the library, so he could toss me onto the bed for a little stress relief before I went back to work. It was much needed for both of us.

But I wanted to have a better idea what the libretto was saying before the rehearsal tonight. At that time of year, sunset was at about quarter to six, so it didn’t give me much time to work before dinner.

Bowyn went back to the book he was reading—a collection of H.P. Lovecraft stories—while I went back to the laptop. Unfortunately, after about an hour and a half, I had to admit I was stymied.

“Goddamn it,” I mumbled to no one in particular, though of course Bowyn heard me. “These aren’t Enochian!”

Bowyn closed his book, putting a finger between the pages to hold his place. “What’s that? I thought we’d established that it was.”

“Certainly big parts of it are,” I admitted, “but there are passages with just a few Enochian words here and there. The rest consists of ‘words’ I can’t find in any of the references.”

Bowyn got up off the bed and came over to look at what I’d accomplished so far. The first two-thirds had been a fairly close approximation of the third Enochian call of the elemental tablets—the one used for invoking the senior angelic spirits of the tablet of Air. There were numerous variations in phonetic spelling—apart from me using “a” for all the vowels—and “grammar,” but I’d been able to work the kinks out of these fairly easily. The final section, however, was extremely problematic. There were still Enochian words interspersed throughout the text, and the rest had a similar “feel” to it, but I was unable to find a good percentage of the words in Dee’s work.

“Please tell me you looked up an online reference guide to Enochian,” Bowyn said.

I rolled my eyes at him. “Of course. I’m not an idiot.” The Casaubon text was invaluable as a primary source but failed to lay out a coherent Enochian dictionary. Additionally, it wasn’t the only source for the language, as Casaubon had only published some of Dee’s writings. Fortunately, there were several Enochian dictionaries that could now be found online. “I’m sure some of the ‘words’ in the libretto are just obscure, because of the way they’re spelled out, and I’ll probably find them eventually. But I’m just as certain that some of them aren’t in any reference I’ve found. I’ve tried every variation on pronunciation I could think of.”

“That doesn’t mean they’re not Enochian,” Bowyn pointed out. “They may just be words that Dee never had revealed to him.”

I mentally kicked myself. Of course. However Ficino had arrived at his “Enochian” language, he hadn’t been in communication with Dee or Kelley. So there were bound to be “words” that were unique to his version.

“In that case, we’re screwed,” I said.
