(111) Rubinstein – Alekhine

Semmering 1926

Queen’s Indian Defense [E16]

(Brilliancy Prize)

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6 4.g3 Bb7 5.Bg2 Bb4+

This simplification is hardly advisable, as White’s queen bishop should develop less activity in the future than Black’s king bishop. More promising, therefore, is 5...Be7.

6.Nbd2

For reasons just mentioned, 6.Bd2 seems to be the logical answer.

6...0-0 7.0-0 d5

As the following shows, this is good enough to equalize. A good maneuver was also 7...Re8, followed by Bb4-f8.

8.a3 Be7 9.b4 c5

The right way to keep the balance in the center. Unsatisfactory, in the positional sense, would be 9...a5 10.b5.

10.b×c5 b×c5 11.d×c5

Also, 11.Rb1 Qc8 12.Qb3 Ba6 etc. would be satisfactory for Black.

11...B×c5 12.Bb2 Nbd7 13.Ne5 N×e5 14.B×e5 Ng4!

This diversion is by no means as harmless as it looks. White loses the game chiefly because he underestimates its importance.

15.Bc3

And not 15.Bb2 Qb6 etc.

15... Rb8 (D)
