GREETINGS

The greeting Mingalaba (from Pali mangala, roughly translated as “auspiciousness to you”) is now widely used by workers, students, the younger generation, and the wider public. However, Htamin sapibila (Have you eaten?), Nei kaung la (How are you?) or just “Hello!” are also still used as forms of greeting among people of all ages, on the phone as well as face to face.

Since the 1988 uprising a new practice has appeared—the clasped two-handed greeting, like a lotus bud, used in India and Thailand. The generals initiated this but later stopped doing it themselves. Civil servants, teachers, farmers, and the public are encouraged to use it as a sign of respect toward the ruling generals whenever they walk among the crowds in the cities and towns. Some people abhor this gesture and never conform to it.
