Karen Browning had organized her older daughter’s wedding years before, but it was a much more elaborate affair than her son now required. She had experience and so she could move ahead quickly.

By the beginning of July, she had sent out all the invitations, booked the reception and found a wedding chapel in a garden setting in a village near Woodstock that had a cancellation in the second week of August. With Nadine and Blair so busy with their own matters she went ahead with all the arrangements and only checked in with Nadine when something unexpected emerged that required an immediate response. One of these was the bride’s outfit.

Although Nadine had purchased a few new pieces for her limited wardrobe, nothing seemed suitable for a wedding. Karen waited until the Principals’ course was over before broaching the subject. When Nadine returned from the last Monday, the day she announced which school she would accept, Karen could sense her relief and the release of the tension of the last three weeks.

She pounced.

“Nadine, dear, I know you said you wanted a wedding without any fuss, but I don’t believe you intend to walk into a garden in front of friends and family in jeans and a shirt or in a formal suit. Can we steal some time to shop?”

“Oh, Karen, of course we can! I am beyond grateful for all you have done since we moved. Anything you need now, I will give my full attention to. Let’s start in the morning. We’ll case the local shops first and if necessary we can move further afield. I am not fussy about clothes, as I am sure you have noticed. Perhaps we can get the job done fast and have a nice lunch in town.”
