Needle Felt Writing

This chapter will give you a step-by-step, in-depth guide to needle felt your name onto a pillow or cushion. Once you learn needle felt writing, you might like to practice by adding people’s names to personalized items, or even making beautiful needle felted quotes to hang up as home decor.

Materials Required

1. Felting wool in one color.

Once you learn needle felt writing, you might be able to do variegated colors across the same word by carefully tucking in one color as you move on to the next. But to learn the basic skills of needle felt writing, it is best to just use one color.

2. Felting Needle

3. Sponge.

This sponge is replacing the foam base you usually use for needle felting projects. The sponge is small enough to fit inside the cushion cover, since you will want to needle felt on only one side of the cushion. If you do not have a sponge in place behind the cushion, your needles will go through both layers of the cover and felt the sides together so that it will be impossible to put over a cushion. As you work, periodically check the sponge to make sure it is still in the right place so that you are only going through one layer of fabric.

4. A cushion or pillowcase on which to felt.

You can felt onto a cushion that does not have a zipper to remove the cover, but you will have to be more aware of how deep your needles are going. If it is at all possible to remove the cushion cover, you will want to do so. You can always use a pillowcase for this practice.
