There’s a related puzzle for defenders to solve: If counterplay can be better than pawn-grabbing, what about giving up a pawn to seize the initiative from an attacker? This question taxed 19th century defenders.

White had steadily increased the pressure on the c6-pawn during the middlegame and would have continued to do so after 1 ... ♕e8 2 ♖a1 followed by ♖a6-b6.

But Black looked for a target and naturally saw b4. He played 1 ... ♖cb7! and then 2 ♖b1 ♖d7!. It was a tacit offer of a pawn – or of a draw by repetition (3 ♖bd1 ♖db7!).

White accepted the pawn, 3 ♖xc6, and Black seized the d-file with 3 ... ♖bd8. In the tournament book, Siegbert Tarrasch seemed shocked in the change. Black’s position had not been this good “in the entire game,” he wrote.

When White prepared to push the c-pawn with 4 ♖b6 Black got to make threats, 4 ... f5 5 ♗f3 ♖d4 6 ♕a6 ♕h4! (rather than 6 ... ♖xf4? 7 ♖b7 ♖d7 8 c6!).
