CHAPTER 37

Eddie Jenkins wasn’t scheduled to work Monday morning, but he showed up at the television station anyway. He wanted to grab a set of tools that he would use to install the security system for Georgia at her home in Aspen later that day.

He parked his battered Subaru wagon in the employee parking lot and entered the building through the back door. As he made his way down the long corridor toward the small room where each of the station’s cameramen had a desk, he overheard two reporters talking.

“Thank God they’ve got me working with Brian today and not Eddie again.”

Eddie recognized the voice as that of Lisa Starks, the perky special assignment reporter hired by the station only a few months earlier. Eddie had worked with her regularly since she had been hired. Nobody could ever replace Georgia, but he thought he and Lisa had developed a mutual friendship. He had obviously thought wrong.

Lisa was talking to the early-morning traffic reporter, another twenty-something right out of school. “Eddie gives me the creeps. We drive around all day and I can feel him watching me. Creepy. Plus, it takes everything I have to not tell him to trim that nasty beard.”

The weather girl laughed. “It’s horrible. It’s so bushy. I’ve wondered if there was something living in it.”

“And the way it creeps down his neck. Can you imagine what his back must look like?”

“Eww.”

They were laughing. Everyone except Eddie, who stood out of sight in the hallway and heard it all. He was overwhelmed by a familiar mix of anger and shame. He was stocky, barely average height, with a face pocked with acne scars—moon face his mother had called him since puberty. In high school, he was no stranger to insults. He knew he was ugly, but he liked to think he made up for it with his personality, winning people over with his jokes and self-deprecating humor. Still, over the years the insults had hurt, but he’d done a good job of not letting anyone know.

Then there was tech school and, later, the opportunity to work for a network affiliate. It was his dream job. For almost twelve years, he prided himself in being the hardest working and best special assignment cameraman at the station. The first reporter he worked with was friendly enough. When Eddie started with the network, Sarah Mitchel had been at the station several years and didn’t mind giving him pointers on how to do the job. She was very efficient and hardworking like Eddie, but she had always been a bit distant and cold. But Eddie had learned a lot from Sarah and was disappointed when she took an anchor job at the affiliate station in Tulsa.

But then the station hired Georgia Glass. Right away Eddie loved working with Georgia. She was different than Sarah—warm and open. He could talk to her about anything and he in turn listened intently when she would confide in him. They quickly became close friends, and
