U.S. CHAMPIONSHIP CHEESE CONTEST

This is the Olympics of cheese, and the winners are appropriately awarded solidgold medals. This competition is as serious as getting your hand stuck in the cheese grater, and cheese heroes from all over the country gather to prove their milk-fat masses are the best.

It all began in 1980 when the Cheesemaker’s Association called for the best of the best to be brought to the table for judgment in Madison. Today, over thirty thousand pounds of dairy, including butter and yogurt, are carefully evaluated in a number of categories. It doesn’t matter if your cheese comes from a cow, a sheep, or a goat, nor whether it’s Swiss, Gouda, or Mexican—everyone gets a shot at the gold. The proceeds from ticket sales ($35 a pop) all go to charity, and the cheese spectator samples all go toward maintaining your muffin top.

THE WISCONSIN STATE FAIR: CHEESE AND BUTTER CONTEST

Every state has a fair to celebrate its unique agricultural and industrial achievements. No matter where you find yourself in ’Merica late in the summer, there will likely be a fair with games, rides, regional food, booze, and music.

The Wisconsin State Fair, held right outside of Milwaukee, is a little cheesier than other states. There’s an official cheese and butter contest that draws dairy professionals from all around the state. Watching the judging is best done with deep-fried mac ’n’ cheese on a stick, fried-cheese curds, and a Krispy Kreme cheeseburger (yeah, doughnut buns). The winning cheeses from the blue ribbon category are auctioned off, and you can walk away with a block of the best cheese in the country in one hand, and a pound of regret in the other.

Fun Fact

In 2013, Wisconsin experimented with using cheese brine to salt down winter streets. We’re not sure if it worked, but we’re positive it must have smelled like a dream after a few days.
