Although you probably won’t be able to dissuade him from his enchantment with teams, it’s still worthwhile for you to talk to him about the team he has created for you. In doing so, you’d say something like, “I think teams are really important, and I want to emphasize the fact that I’m a team player. If you really want me to work on this project with both of the guys, I’ll gladly do it.” Notice that you opened with a clause that will immediately get him to nod in agreement. This is a quick, unspoken yes, isn’t it?

At this point, you’d continue, “But as an experiment, how about if I do this particular project on my own, just this one time? If it falls short, lesson learned, and it won’t happen again. And if it comes out great, then everyone wins. You get a completed project, the others can do other work, and I can do what I do best.” It’s a long shot with a true-believing office idiot, but it’s worth a shot nonetheless. Besides, it’s a variation of the trial offer, previously discussed as one of the most powerful persuasive techniques.
