Chapter 10

As I landed on my back on the ground, I felt the air rush from my lungs. I blinked up at the clear sky and sucked in a ragged, quivering breath as I waited for my brain to figure out what had happened. The bullet had hit me just to the left of my chest, right above my left lung, and the force of the impact had winded me. My torso shuddered as my lungs tried to expand, but I didn’t rise from the ground.

“We have our victor,” John Score’s disappointed voice echoed down the street.

“Going to see the wife, Buck?” I heard Bradley sneer.

Good, I thought to myself. Buck had listened to my instructions and had headed straight for the pub after he fired the shot. Even on his injured legs, I assumed he had to be inside by now.

“Is the hacker dead?” John called out.

I heard a few shuffling footsteps coming toward me, so I tensed my body, closed my eyes, and forced my twitching chest to remain still. The person edged closer still, and I heard the click of the safety on a gun. If I wasn’t dead, they were going to make sure I was. He gasped in pain and surprise, and his fingers let go of the gun as he reached for his neck. I turned the man’s weapon on him and shot him between the eyes. Someone jumped on my back, but I reached over my shoulder and threw him onto the ground in front of me with one hand. I put a bullet in his stomach, then shot the other guy to the right of me without even looking.

The rest of the Bandits lined up along the road roared in surprise and anger, and after a second’s hesitation, the crowd began to race toward me. But I held my ground in the middle of the road as I lured them out from the safety of the sidewalks.

John Score led the charge, of course. His eyes were wild with rage, though I wasn’t sure if he was more furious that I’d outsmarted him or that I’d ruined his precious event. Either way, my survival had undermined his power and leadership in everyone’s eyes, and he clearly planned to make me suffer for it. But I smiled at him as he ran at me, and he seemed to realize that I wouldn’t be the one suffering today.

I looked up when I felt the hum of the engines, and I let out a cheer of my own as Wendy appeared with my ship. The
