CHAPTER 23

ONE STEP BACK

RESPAWN POINT UPDATED

MEMORIAL BARROW

The resting place of deceased Antaurs was nothing fancy. A line of mounds ended in an open pit with numerous carcasses awaiting company before the dirt would be packed atop them and a new pit dug.

Konroh hoped never to need to respawn here.

“You all set?” Dyz asked.

“Yeah.”

“Good call stopping by. I’d totally forgotten we’re mortal.”

ANTAUR COLONY

They shared a laugh and meandered their way out of the tunnel system to a point high up the Spire of Fate.

CLIFFS OF CLAVEN

“So…” Konroh kicked things off, inching up to the cliff ledge and peering down into a void so deep he couldn’t make out the bottom. “Quick way or slow?”

Dyz stared into the sky, preoccupied. “It’s chilly. No glare. Is it night now?”

Konroh searched for the sun, but the circle he found in the heavens could have been the moon, for all he could tell. “Dunno.”

“Is the temperature a clue?”

“Kinda don’t notice it one way or the other.”

“All right, tough guy. You wanna know whether we hang glide down like bosses or trust the spiders to get us there in one piece?”

“I was thinking more trusting the vagaries of wind and our own amateur piloting skills or ensuring our slow arrival via an even more terrifying slow march straight down a sheer cliff, trusting in an unholy arachnid terror to safeguard us.”

“Wow. You’re kind of a mess in there, huh?” Dyz asked, tapping at his helmet. She immediately backed off. “Sorry. No judgment. Everyone’s got their own shiz to deal with. Honestly, feeling safe alone in the dark in Spire of Fate is pretty therapeutic for me.”

“You pick,” Konroh told her. “What’s the smart way down? We’ll need the spiders to get back up here, but I’ll take your decision on how best to get to the little spire.”

“Gliders. If we botch this, my bad. We can fix it with spiders.”

“…a phrase I don’t think I’ve heard anyone use in my life.”

Dyz chuckled and pulled out her Kawaiian Glider.

Konroh did likewise.

She started a countdown. “Three… two… one…” Dyz jumped.

After a split-second hesitation, Konroh launched himself into space behind her.

The airspace around the Spire of Fate was theirs. Wind rushed past Konroh’s face. He was free. Free of monsters and bloodthirsty enemy players. Free of quests and minimaps and skill selections. Free from the comforting grasp of gravity and full control over his direction and speed.

His guts clenched. Without much for bearings, he laser focused on Dyz out ahead of him by three or four glider lengths and followed, not letting his eyes turn downward to stare into the abyss beyond his Blood Vision.

Sooner than he’d feared, the smaller peak came into view up ahead past Dyz. He couldn’t ignore it. In point of fact, ignoring it wasn’t even something he ought to have been attempting.

Dyz pulled up as the ground rushed toward them. Belatedly, Konroh joined her, shedding speed and regaining lost altitude. She arced up and into the White Gobo village.

“Is this a good idea?” he shouted over the wind.
