Getting Current Status

There are instances when you need to know the current state of the software update daemon. This was not always easy to ascertain in previous version of OS X. In OS X 10.11 El Capitan you can now use the --dump-state option for getting its current state. An example of the command is below:

softwareupdate --dump-state

When this command is run it will output its log to /var/log/install.log. In this log file it will provide the number of updates currently in the cache as well as the Software Update URL. Also included in the log dump is some of the recently installed updates. This function will be great if you need to debug an issue with a Mac with OS X 10.11 El Capitan installed.
