“BACK THEN, I didn’t know how to describe it to Vince. It wasn’t until after everything happened that it made sense—that from the moment I saw Horace, I knew something was deeply wrong out in those woods. What else could make a man who is that sick stumble out in the cold and walk all that way?

“I wish I could say it was a higher power or something like that, but that would be bullshit. No one spoke to me. I just had a feeling. I could just see it in his eyes.”

WE GAVE the side of the outcropping a wide berth. Both of us held our rifles in a position where we could raise them in a hurry as we took in the cave before us. It was larger than I had anticipated, well over nine feet wide and as many feet tall. I couldn’t see very far in, but the walls appeared smooth from what I could tell. Starting to approach it slowly, I was very conscious of the eerie silence around us. The only sounds we could hear were the wind and the underbrush crunching beneath our boots.

“Man…”

I stepped on something that cracked, causing both of them to jump. I looked down, but before I could really take in what made the noise beneath my boot, my eyes were drawn back to the cave as a soft light came alive inside. It pulsed with a greenish hue, ebbing in intensity before finally fading again.

“Okay, what the actual fuck?”

I swallowed hard, ignoring Vince as I crossed the short distance between us and the cave. I heard him telling me to stop in a hushed tone, but I couldn’t. I felt the same feeling of discovery I’d only experienced a handful of times. It propelled me forward, despite the danger we both sensed.
