'Ah,' he said grimly. 'My little nursemaid.' He rose to his feet, questing for her. The weeks since the accident had taken ten pounds off his powerful frame, and his face was fierce, the bronzed skin taut over the bone. Sensing her timid appraisal, his mouth tightened. 'What's the matter? Do I look any different?'

'You look fine,' she said stupidly.

'Thank you.' His politeness was abrasive, meant to wound. 'Now tell me how you look.'

'I—your father's sent some of your clothes and things over to Northwood. I've got your room ready. It's all waiting for you there.'

'Wonderful!'

'My car's just outside.'

'Clever you!'

In dismay, Cathy glanced at the senior staff nurse, who looked studiously bland.

'Goodbye, Mr Blackthorne,' she said with professional jollity. 'I'm sure you're in good hands now. You know we're always here if you need us.'

'Shall we go?' Cathy suggested hastily, anticipating some poisonous retort from Fabian.

'Yes, let's go, for God's sake. Anything will be better than this place.' Suddenly he reached out a hand, and brushed her face with probing fingers. She flinched, then held still as he traced the contours of her eyelids, her mouth, her slender throat.

'You've had your hair cut.'

'It was far too long.' She hesitated. 'You must have a good memory.'

'I'll adapt,' Fabian said sardonically. 'The world is full of blind lawyers.' He shrugged at her awkward silence. 'Let's go.'

He strode towards the door, his movements making no concession to the fear and uncertainty he must be feeling. But the door was half closed, and she called out too late; Fabian slammed into the edge of the door, his cheek cannoning off the wood with a sickening crack.

'Oh God!' she groaned softly, taking his arm. 'Are you all right?'

'Leave me be!' he snapped, white with fury. He shook her arm off with savage strength.

'I'm sorry,' she said helplessly.

'I don't want your damned sorrow,' he snarled. 'Remember that, Cathy. Not now. Not ever!'

Gritting her teeth, she reached for his arm again. 'Don't be a fool, Fabian. Your life has changed. Outside the walls of this place there'll be nobody to stop you from walking into things. And you can't bulldoze your way through every obstacle. Now let me show you the way.'

Silent, his face tense, he clamped steel fingers around her upper arm. Suppressing pain and anger, she led him down to the car.

His stormy grey eyes were fixed on nothing, yet from time to time they flickered, as though he were watching scenes within his mind. Cathy had noticed that before. It was symbolic of how, he was, she thought, locked into his own world of pain and anger. Was anything ever going to get him out?

He was silent during the long drive out to Northwood. From time to time she glanced at him, trying to assess his state of mind. He was physically as stunning as
