General George S. Patton Jr. The photo was taken at the Desert Training Center near Indio, California, in 1942. At the time of the photo, Patton was a major general. The tank in the background was an M3A1 Stuart light tank. Patton assumed command of II Corps in March 1943, replacing the disgraced Maj. Gen. Lloyd Fredendall.
