Eighteen

Trixie loved the Green. She darted around, sniffing interesting scents of dogs, cats, and her archenemies—squirrels! I could only hope that she wouldn’t run ahead to her friend Zelda. But so far, there were too many intriguing smells.

The lampposts in the Green shed enough light to walk safely through the park, but not so much that one could see far ahead. The trees loomed large and dark in the night. Crickets chirped their universal song. It soothed my anxiety, as though everything were right in the world.

Zelda and Nate paused ahead of me under a light. Zelda looked up at Nate, who bent his head to kiss her.

Nooo! I wanted to separate them. To warn Zelda so she wouldn’t be disappointed when Nate was arrested or when she learned that he might be married to Dana. But it was probably already too late for that. Zelda would be brokenhearted. And what was a married man doing kissing Zelda anyway? The rat!

I sank into the shadows and waited silently. Dad had been right about the police in Snowball taking too long to get to Wagtail. I had to stick with them.

But my little dodge into a darker nook proved surprising. On the path, the shadowy figure of a man stopped short and gazed around. I scooped up Trixie, slid off my jacket, and covered her white fur with it. Stroking her so she would remain quiet and wouldn’t squirm, I watched the other person. I had no reason to imagine that he was following me. But why had he stopped walking? Most people would simply continue on their way.

Unless it was Ben. That was a good bet. He appeared to be taller than Ben, but in the shadows, it was hard to tell.

Zelda and Nate were walking again. But the person in the shadows remained still. My best bet was to catch up to Zelda and Nate.

I darted toward them, stepping on a twig that broke with a snap. In the still of the night, it seemed incredibly loud.

Footsteps sped up behind me.

Clutching Trixie, I ran in the direction of Zelda and Nate. The footsteps pounded behind me now, but I didn’t dare stop to see who it was. “Zelda!” I called.

But it was Nate who turned around and gazed at me. I caught up to him, panting. “Where is Zelda? I thought she was with you.”

“She got a text from someone about an emergency at the inn.”

A quiver ran through me. Chances were good that there wasn’t an emergency and they had used that excuse to lure her away from Nate. But why? Were the police here and closing in on him? Did they want him to be alone?

I dared to look behind me. A couple strolled toward us holding hands. Their cocker spaniel ran to me and sniffed Trixie.

There was no sign of the shadow that had been after me. It couldn’t have been the couple. I set Trixie on the ground. She and the cocker spaniel were instant friends, politely getting to know each other.
