Superintendent Samsiah is having a cup of tea, which she brewed herself in the office. Seeing the two officers, she waves them in.

“A cup of tea?” she offers.

“Thanks but no thanks, ma’am,” Mislan answers for both of them. He places the police report on the desk, pushing it closer toward her.

“What’s this?” Samsiah asks, putting down her cup. She puts on her reading glasses and starts reading. When she puts the report down, she says, “So, we have a philanthropist who wished to remain anonymous. Another Arab prince, I suppose,” she adds with a sly smile.

Mislan laughs, but Johan still does not catch the joke.

“What’s with the Arab prince?” Johan asks, curious.

“The ex-PM Najib. Remember the 2.6 billion in his account he claimed to be from an Arab prince who wished to remain anonymous?” she explains.

“Ooo, yeah,” Johan says, followed by a chuckle when he finally gets the joke.

“The phone number of the donor is that of my vic, Ajimullah,” Mislan says.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes,” Johan replies, showing her the victim’s cell phone number, which he’d obtained from Ismail Sabri, the chicken seller who was not only the victim’s ex-employer but the registered tenant of the crime scene house.

“What’s the meaning of all this?” she asks, puzzled.

“A game,” Mislan says. “The Seremban 2 killers used the vic’s phone to call in the incident shortly after killing the victim. The same MO with our case, which only goes to point to the same perpetrators. Then, for some sick reasons, the killers used the same phone to call this foundation to make a donation of twenty K. How sick is that?”

“You came to see me because …?”

“I need to do an IPRS search, I can’t access nonserious crimes reports. If my hunch is right, there may be other reports of a similar nature.”

“Your hunch says these unknown philanthropists are your killers?”

Mislan shrugs.

“They may or may not be the killers, but the phone numbers used to report the incidents to 999 and now this say they are connected one way or another. You see, the Myanmar- —by the way, what do you call a Myanmar national?”

“Myanmarian or Myanmarese, I don’t know,” Samsiah says.

“Anyway, the guy, I can’t remember his name, the one we picked up at the wholesale market—Azara, yes Azara, he claimed the vics sometimes kept large amounts of cash in the house. He said between two fifty to three hundred K. I think the killers weren’t interested in the drugs but in the cash. The druggie Adham said he saw one of them carrying a large backpack when they came out of the house. It could be the cash.”

“And then they donate the money to the needy,” Samsiah says. “Modern-day Robin Hood, a bit farfetched but interesting.”

“I like the term ‘philanthropist’ better.”

“Philanthropist it is. How far back do you want this search?”

“Just one month.”

Samsiah arches her eyebrows.

“The Seremban 2 case was about a month back. I couldn’t find anything going further than that.”

“By the way, speaking of Seremban 2, I received feedback from NCID, Negeri Sembilan Contingent.
