An Emoi

Week Ten

Ho Chi Minh City

When I first read the Communist Manifesto, I was surprised to find references to sex. It is only 30 pages long: 28 a critique of capitalism and only two on what to do instead. Despite being perhaps the most influential political pamphlet of the last three centuries, it is so short you would not think there would be any space to discuss sex. But sure enough, there is.

“Our bourgeois, not content with having the wives and daughters of their proletarians at their disposal, not to speak of common prostitutes, take the greatest pleasure in seducing each others wives.”

Marx and Engel’s solution is not that the rich stop fucking other people’s wives, as you might expect, but for everyone else to fuck them too. They explain that if the rich enjoy the freedom of a “community of women,” the commoners should enjoy the same.

When I fantasize about being successful, I fantasize about women throwing themselves at me. I want them to beg me to fuck them. I want them to post depraved comments on my Instagram feed. I want them to send me pictures of their boobs and selfies of their asses bent over their bathroom sinks. I want them to line up outside my dressing room. I want to be like Leonardo DiCaprio and go home with a different woman every night. I want to be able to point and choose.

As a normal, non-rich, non-famous American, however, I feel that I don’t deserve it. I don’t have a right to expect sex from a lot of different women. That’s gross. I’m lucky to have even one. If I’m stupid enough to take another while committed to that one, then I deserve to be alone.

Marx flips this notion on its head. In his brand of socialism, everyone has a right to expect sex from everyone else. If the bourgeoisie are swapping wives and having sex parties in their mansions, the common people should feel free to do the same.

Free love is a gorgeous solution, but, unfortunately like many tenets of communism it runs against the cruel reality of human nature. That so many communist women throw themselves at capitalist men is proof. We were like the name brand soda the Estonian women craved when they were growing up in the USSR. Communal goods only work if there aren’t “better,” name brand ones available. I might as well of had America® printed on my forehead.

I encountered many divorced women in Saigon who believed strongly in fidelity, and could not accept their husbands’ philandering. These women were somewhat sad sights. They were older and lacked the pizzazz of the younger emois. They were drawn to me as a neophyte American in the way a senior in high school is drawn to a freshman. I was virginal; the best they could still hope for.
