RAMSAY
âYouâre a dick.â
I was in the kitchen, making spaghetti because, for once, my mom wasnât working, and I was happy. And I was leaning into that happiness because everything else, Iâd deal with later. Mom and daughter night tonight, hell yes.
Clint had declared that, coming in from the back door. Trenton and Alex followed. All had scowls, but when my mom came out from the bathroom, the scowls disappeared.
âHey, you guys. Are you coming over for dinner?â She greeted each with a kiss to their cheeks, one by one. They rotated around for her.
âUh . . .â Clint gave me a meaningful look. âWe are now.â
I didnât respond, but reached out and grabbed another huge handful of noodles for the pot. Weâd also need a second sauce jar. âIâll grab the sauce.â
âNo, no.â My mom came over, patting me on the arm. âIâll grab it.â
I noticed how she grabbed her phone on the way. She was probably calling my aunt to see what was up. The guys had come in with attitude.
Alex watched her go down the hallway. âSheâs in her room,â he announced after a moment.
âSheâs calling Mom,â Trenton added.
âWho cares.â Clint hadnât stopped scowling at me. âThanks to Kira, we know whatâs going on with our own cousin. What the fuck, Rams?â
âYouâre mad at me about the article he wrote?â
âWeâre mad we didnât hear it from you. Why didnât you tell us?â
I was aware of a peculiar look Alex was giving me, but one thing at a time here. Ducking my head, stirring the still-hard noodles, I shrugged. âItâsâwait a minute.â I remembered why I hadnât told them and whirled around, the spoon in hand. âA lot happened today.â I shot Alex a peculiar look right back because Scout informed me of their come-to-Jesus moment. âI fully intended to air everything out with you, but then I came home and forgot my mom had tonight off. Itâs a mom/daughter night.â
âYeah. Well.â Alex leaned forward, grabbing my spoon and nudging me out of the way. âWeâre not leaving.â
I measured him with a look. âDo we need to talk?â
He growled but ignored me, still holding my spoon. âNo. Scout and I had it out. I do not like itââ
âNone of us fucking like it,â Clint corrected.
Alex kept going as if his brother hadnât spoken, âBut also aware you do your own shit. Trust and believe, though, that I made him promise that the second any emotions start acting up, he cuts it off.â His face got all serious. âI mean that, Rams. Weâve each picked you up, and I will not let my best friend be another reason weâre picking you up from the floor.â
My throat swelled up, but I blinked, pushing past that and jerked my head up and down. âGot it.â
âNo emotions. And thatâs such a weird thing Iâve evenâletâs never talk about this again? How about that?â
I started to smile, then thought better about it. That might be pushing it. âOkay. No emotions. No more talking about me and him.
