Harmony and the harmonious society met each other in the new slogan, “building a community of human destiny” (人类命运共同体 Renlei mingyun gongtongti), which, like hexie, is basically unlimited in scope.42 A major conference on “the community of human destiny” in Beijing on the 2,570th anniversary of Confucius’s birth (2019, thirty years after the conference with which this chapter opened) featured dignitaries and scholars from some eighty nations. As the conference description notes, Confucian values played a role in developing the slogan:

Through heated discussions, experts and scholars have gained important insights on how Confucian culture can provide ideological nourishment and cultural support for the promotion of “building a community of human destiny” in the fields of politics, security, economy, culture, and ecology.… The Confucian culture’s unremitting pursuit of “Harmony” and “Universal Unity” can provide a historical mirror for “building a community of shared future for mankind.”43
