17cm A small, insect-eating kingfisher, with a dark, streaky head, a black eye stripe, a distinctive buff-white collar and a red-black bill. The rump and tail are bright azure-blue, clearly seen only in flight. Sexes are alike; immature resembles adults but is duller coloured. Often seen in savannas and woodlands, sitting in a hunched position, on an open branch. Feeds on insects, grasshoppers and lizards. This kingfisher’s loud, trilling call is a feature of its savanna and woodland habitat. The Brown-hooded Kingfisher (H. albventris) is similar and larger, with an all-red bill and a paler head.
