In a way, I think your style is actually just the best version of yourself.

If you’ve done any sketching at all so far, you already have a style; it may just be difficult for you to see it. And who knows, others might already be admiring your style! Back in Chapter 3, I mentioned that sketching is an extension of your voice and your character; the sketches you leave on the whiteboard and the sketches you include in your presentations will speak of you and for you, no matter what.

Having said that, here are seven ways to find and refine your own style:

Learn from work that you admire

Take the time to find others’ work that inspires you in some way. It could be old masters’ paintings and sketches, or a particular cartoonist, or a favorite graphic novel artist. Pick at least three different people’s work, and then analyze why you like it. Is it something about the line work? The colors used? A particular technique? The subject matter? Try to be as specific as possible, because this will help you lock into details that you then can try yourself.
