Question: What happened during Jesus’ last hours before His death?

Answer: The night before Jesus’ death, He washed the feet of His disciples, and then shared the Passover meal with them. During this time Judas was revealed as the one who would betray His master (John 13:1–30). At the conclusion of the meal, Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26–29; 1 Corinthians 11:23–26). Then the group sang a hymn and left for the Mount of Olives, a place where Jesus often spent time with His disciples (Mark 14:26). That same night, He spoke many things to His disciples concerning the Holy Spirit, His soon departure, and their responsibility to love one another and abide in Christ (John 14–16). He also prayed for His disciples and for everyone who would someday believe in Him (John 17).

When they came to the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus pulled Peter, John, and James away, told them to pray so they wouldn’t fall into temptation, and went off a short distance by Himself to pray. The disciples promptly fell asleep.

Jesus was grieved and depressed as He approached death. He was so anguished that His sweat fell like drops of blood (Luke 22:44). He asked God to take the coming torment from Him, but only if it was the Father’s will (Luke 22:42). It wasn’t only the anticipation of scourging or the horrible hours on the cross that caused Jesus’ sorrow. Adding to His distress in the garden was the knowledge that He would be separated from God and bear the sin of the world (Matthew 27:46; Isaiah 53).

God sent an angel to strengthen Jesus. The Lord again asked Peter, James, and John to pray, but again they fell asleep. Their spirits may have been willing to pray, but their flesh was weak (Matthew 26:41). As Jesus was speaking to them, Judas approached with an armed mob. Judas greeted Jesus as a friend and then turned Him over to the mob. At this time, Jesus performed two miracles: at His word, the entire mob was prostrated (John 18:6), and He healed a wounded man (Luke 22:51).
