Fowler’s six stages of faith development and Ram Dass’s personal experiences support the idea that, although bypass is not an ideal condition, it may be an inherent part of one’s spiritual journey. M. Scott Peck’s model of spiritual development supports the same conclusion, that spiritual bypass may play a fundamental role in one’s spiritual growth.

Peck’s Stages of Spiritual Development

Regarding spiritual growth, Peck states in The Different Drum that Fowler is the “most widely read scholar of the subject.” However, Peck created his four stages of spiritual development based on his own personal and spiritual journey, as well as through his work as a psychotherapist. Peck’s four stages are chaotic-antisocial, formal-institutional, skeptical-individual, and mystical-communal.
