CHAPTER 37
Ambassador Chol-Min Seo showed General Kim Yon-Ja the utmost respect, as did everyone else in the North Korean hierarchy. One bad word from him to the Supreme Leader would mean a one-way ticket to a labor camp. If you were lucky, you would be killed on the spot.
âYou look very well,â Seo said.
âI see you gained some weight, colonel,â Kim responded in Korean. âYou need to lay off the cognacs.â The old man then looked at Elena Natase. âYou, on the other hand, look as vibrant as ever, my dear. When will you be visiting the Supreme Leader again?â
âWhen this incident is cleared up, I shall fly into his arms at the first opportunity,â she said in slightly accented Korean.
Kim clapped his hands together. âSo, shall we proceed to our subject? The Supreme Leader is insistent that our traitor suffers greatly.â
âHeâs all prepped and ready for you in the barn,â Seo said.
âExcellent. Take me to him.â
Seo guided Kim, who walked with a cane, to a large wooden shack at the rear of the property. Inside, Councilman Wang Wéi sat tied to a chair, wearing only his white underpants. Jong-Su Kang stood by his side.
Wangâs face went pale when he saw Kim enter the barn. âPlease have mercy,â he cried.
Kim scoffed as he approached the prisoner. âDo you think you can play double agent with us and get away with it? You are a fool. You shall die slowly and painfully. Iâm sure youâre familiar with the process known as âdeath by a thousand cuts?ââ
Being a student of history, Seo indeed was familiar with the torture technique, although he had never seen it carried out. Officially known as Lingchi, it was a form of execution practiced in ancient China that was reserved for the nastiest of criminals. In some Chinese dynasties, it was deemed too cruel and was banned. Lingchi consisted of inflicting cuts to the arms, legs, and chest of the victim with a sharp knife over three to four days, followed by shaving off the nose and ears and then amputating all four limbs. If the person sentenced to this torture still survived, they lopped the head off as a grand finale.
Wang struggled to break himself free, his breaths coming in short spurts. Liquid feces soiled his white underwear and dripped from the chair to the floor.
Kim walked over to a table where a quartet of different-sized knives had been laid in a neat line. âI donât get to practice this one much, so itâll serve as a nice refresher,â he said.
To keep Wang from screaming, Kang stuffed a rolled-up handkerchief into his mouth. âThis should keep you quiet.â
Holding up a hot soldering iron, Kim said to Wang, âI will be merciful and start with your eyes, so you wonât have to see your body being carved up.â
In a warped display of showmanship, Kim dipped the tip of the soldering iron into a small bowl of water, which sizzled upon contact with the hot metal. Kim then held the soldering iron to Wangâs face.
