Chapter

Fifteen

I stared at the headmaster in disbelief before my gaze quickly darted to the shattered china cabinet and the shards of glass and dishes scattered all over the hardwood floor, some still intact.

Stinging pain gripped me as I looked down at myself. My shirt was ripped, and I was bleeding from cuts all over my arms, while my forehead had a gash on it. Headmaster Tarus and Ethan were standing close by, their clothes also torn, with several cuts sprinkled across their faces. All of us were trembling from shock.

Headmaster Tarus flicked his gaze over me. “You’re bleeding. We need to get you to Dr. Lascar’s for treatment.” His voice was strained with worry.

“You as well.” I weakly tried to smile but couldn’t manage it. “I’m… I’m okay.”

Suddenly panic swelled inside me, and I looked wildly around the room. “Wait. Bellona? Bellona? Where is she?”

I’m okay. Bellona shook her body. None of the glass hit me.

Ethan picked her up. “See? She’s okay.”

Bellona meowed softly.

I stared into the headmaster’s troubled eyes. “How did that creature get in here? And what did it mean by the stone?”

Headmaster Tarus sighed deeply. “I’m afraid there must be a portal here. I don’t know how your father did it, but of course, he’s very powerful…” He rubbed his cut forehead, smearing the blood. “I thought I had sealed my quarters.”

I noticed he didn’t answer my question about the stone.

Tears stung my eyes and I balled my fists. “Everything always goes back to Father.”

The headmaster gritted his teeth. “Yes, but we have no way to prove it. It’s my word against his.”

I hung my head. “Then what do we do?”

“I’m not sure yet. But there’s something else, Rose. When Ethan and I were trying to banish that creature, I felt a surge of incredible power coming from behind me. That was you, wasn’t it?” His voice was soft as he searched my eyes for an answer.

My bottom lip quivered. “I don’t… I don’t even know how I did that. It’s never happened before.”

He took my shaking hand in his own and squeezed it gently. “Rose, there’s something special about you, something even more mysterious than I ever imagined. But now the enemy knows what you can do. You must be very careful in the future.”

I sucked in a sharp breath and forced myself to meet his gaze. “That’s an understatement,” I mumbled.

Ethan looked at the headmaster, his face grave and thoughtful. “What if Rose’s father left something here when he came to dinner that night? And that is what has been drawing the creature to her?”

The hair on the back of my neck prickled and a cold chill ran down my spine. I widened my eyes in shock. “Is that even possible?”

The headmaster peered underneath the table. “Oh, very possible. He could have muttered a spell or curse that we didn’t hear, or he could have left a hex bag.”

“What does a hex bag look like?” I asked as Ethan bent down to check underneath each chair.
