In one sense, the cast of CBS’s The Big Bang Theory may seem more appealing than your own friends.

Glenn sometimes compares the media to a “scratch and sniff sticker,” where you open a magazine and see an ad that you scratch to smell the fragrance of a flower or salty air from the seashore. The aroma is an instrument to stimulate your memory about a past experience and prompt you to buy the product. Obviously it isn’t like the experience itself, but a pale comparison. In some ways, when media depictions draw us into a web of personalities, debates, and emotions they are like a scratch-and-sniff experience. They resemble real-life intimacy and evoke feelings and memories of our most intimate connections. In itself, there’s nothing wrong with this experience, and it can be pleasant. But just as we might worry about the fool who habitually used substitute experiences for real-life experiences, we should also pity those of us who habitually substitute media relationships for real-life connections and the intimacy that can only be realized in the flesh.
