Chapter Thirteen

Marisha

I was literally vibrating with anger and hurt as I ran out of the stairwell.

“Marisha, what’s wrong?” Tucker asked me the minute he saw me in the hallway.

“Nothing.” I went to get past him, and he grabbed my arm.

“What’s going on?”

I couldn’t stop the tears; they broke through and began to race down my cheeks. I ripped my arm from his grasp and ran down the hallway without a word.

I was jabbing my finger at the elevator button with one hand and swiping tears off my face with the other when Josey rushed up behind me. “Marisha, what did Jake do?”

“Nothing,” I repeated to Josey.

“Bullshit! I know it was Jake, and so does your brother.” The elevator door opened, and I rushed in, Josey right on my heels. “Jake walked out the door right after you ran down the hallway. Your brother was out of his wheelchair and about to kill Jake. What’s going on?”

I stared at Josey. Tucker was threatening Jake? Good. I nodded to Josey and muttered, “I hope he kicks his ass.”

“What the hell happened?” she asked as the elevator came to a stop at our floor, and the two of us got out and headed toward my room.

“I made a huge mistake is what happened. Jake is a total asshole.”

“Why?”

Once we were inside, I ripped off my leather jacket and threw it over the back of a chair before I fell back on the bed, my arm covering my eyes.

Josey took a seat next to me. “Talk to me, Marisha. What happened?”

“I slept with Jake last night.”

She was quiet for a moment, “Okay, and did something not go well?”

I threw my arm out, “No! It was perfect, wonderful, the best sex I’d ever had.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

I sighed and put my hands over my face, “The problem is that I screwed up. I totally screwed up.”

Josey laid down beside me and for the first time in forever, I felt like I had a real sister as I turned to look at her. I started to tell her everything from how I went to his place last night and saw Becky leaving, to how I’d stayed with him overnight.

“Josey, making love to him was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. It was incredible. Like our very souls were connected and not just our bodies.”

“That’s the way it is with Tucker. I get it.”

“This morning I work up early, like I always do, and I had a stupid idea. I went and picked up the groceries for his father, like Jake does every day, and I took them over to his house.”

“Without Jake?”

“Yeah, and then I went back and left him a note that I had done that.”

“Was that why he was mad at you?”

I shook my head as I stood up abruptly. “No, Becky, the front desk clerk, had seen me in his truck and asked me why I was driving his truck. I made a flippant comment about being with Jake overnight, and she must have said something to someone.
