In grades 9–12, grades do matter, and if students lose significant points on unfinished homework, this could affect their transcripts.

But the truth is that high-school students who regularly spend more than two hours per night on homework are taking too many classes, or too difficult classes, and should cut back.

Cramming a high-school student’s schedule full of AP classes to make them more competitive in college admissions is a mistake, if that means the student has no life apart from school.

Getting a kid into any particular college is a complete spin of the roulette wheel. Selective colleges see, literally, thousands of applications from students with all-AP schedules and GPAs of over 4.0. (The titles listed under “College” in Appendix C provide plenty of documentation for this.) If your high-school student is doing three to four hours of homework every night, she is leading an unbalanced life and not particularly raising her chances of college admission.

Give her permission to breathe.
