Chapter Eleven

Kara was tossing and turning, trying to stay away from the darkness. It kept reaching for her, trying to pull her in. She eased a little when a hand tugged her blankets higher, smoothing them over her shoulder.

Niall, was her first thought, before she sleepily thought better of it. He would be far more likely to climb in and snuggle close, warming her with the heat of his body.

“Turner?” she asked, rolling over and only halfway succeeding in opening her eyes. If she could sleep a little longer…

“Holy mother of—” Gasping, she sat up straight and scooted back against the headboard. “What are you doing?” she rasped at the stranger standing by her bed.

“I heard you wished to speak with me,” the man said quietly.

She stared. He wore impeccable morning dress, every seam straight and everything brushed and neat. He held his hat in his hand, turning it as he watched her carefully through thick lashes. His blond hair caught the morning light.

“Elias Wade?” she whispered.

He nodded. “I heard you were injured in some way, looking for me last night. I only came to say how sorry I was, and to make sure you were recovered.”

“He was called down to speak to a police inspector. The older man was with them as well. I was waiting for a chance to talk to you alone, so I came up.”

They were in the Adams Road building, she realized belatedly. The older gentleman must be Turner. She had a vague recollection of hearing his voice last night. Suddenly, she pierced Wade with a frown. “Where were you waiting?”

“Out of the way, where I could see and hear and wait for my chance.”

“You were hiding.”

“Yes.”

“Did you follow us here?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He shifted. He didn’t look directly at her, but watched his hat and stared at the bed. “I heard about you and your friend looking for me. I saw her when they were taking you out.” He made a face. “I didn’t wish to talk to her. I thought she might be…difficult. I would rather it was you, if I had to speak at all. What was it you wanted?”

She stared. “We need to speak with you about Frederick Cole’s death.”

“Why?” He sounded surprised—and reluctant.

Kara paused to watch him. She thought about all the disparaging remarks she’d heard about him. He didn’t appear arrogant to her, merely forthright. She’d known others who could be quite literal in their interpretations and their conversations. Such directness could be interpreted as dismissal or defiance. She’d met
