CHAPTER 7

I flicked on the light, threw off the plush covers, and ran to the bedroom door, throwing it open. “Derek, we need to talk about something.”

The only response I received was the thud-thud of thundering footsteps bounding up the stairs.

The man looked like an invader of old, glorious and terrible, and rushed to me, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me into the room, closing the door behind us with a decided click. “Thank you. I want to talk about us too. I can’t think about or process anything except for the fact that you’re here, we’re together again, and once more, someone tried to harm you because of me.” His body fairly vibrated with intensity.

He pressed rabid small kisses against the column of my throat, across my jawline, then nibbled at my earlobe.

A delicious wave of want rippled through me. I remembered this part of our relationship all too well. His broad shoulders, his tapered waist, his defined muscles, and farther down… Heat pooled at the vee of my thighs, and lust fogged my brain. My mind created vivid scenes of dragging him to the bed and reenacting our past intimate moments. While my body found this idea an excellent one and trembled in anticipation, my lawyer logic disagreed.

You had an important epiphany. Ignore your flaming female bits and lift the fog from your brain. Right. Someone was after me and Glen and Derek. That same someone was threatening, harming, and killing people in the entertainment world. Focus. “Derek, I have to tell you something…”

“Then tell me while I’m holding you. I won’t let you go ever again.” He murmured the words against my neck, and my breathing sped up.

None of that.

I cradled his face in my hands and pulled him away from my sensitive ear. “Derek, look at me.”

He did, and the force of his gaze made me stagger a step. Midnight orbs riveted me to the point I had to look away. I pointed to the bed. “Let’s sit. I had a revelation a few moments ago.”

“Of us in bed? Show, don’t tell, babe.” He swooped me in his arms and lay me down on the white coverlet.

I sat up before he could crawl atop me. My weak willpower couldn’t resist the feast he offered. “Derek, the breakthrough was about the spell caster, not us.”

He drew up on his knees and recoiled like I’d punched him. Backing away, he pushed off the mattress to stand, towering over me. “You called me in here to talk about the attack? What do you think my team and I were working on downstairs?”

No way would I stare up at him while wearing nothing but a T-shirt and a pair of sleep shorts—I’d packed for comfort, not sexy times. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood. “I realized who we left out of the investigation.”

“You haven’t forgiven me for putting space between us, have you?”

My brain did one of those double-takes like you’d see in a cartoon.
