24. Working All Day, All Night, Alright, Part 1

Back inside the hidden camp lair, Joey waited for more demons and monsters to show themselves. As he waited, his wife stood beside him and massaged the kink out of his back.

He had to combine two tables he’d normally used for laying out tools and materials when crafting. The tables worked well enough for him to lie belly down, his chin on his folded arms.

Maylolee’s hands rubbed and pressed and teased the tension out of his back. She was superb at back massages.

It was hard to concentrate while she performed her pampering technique for him. It was a good thing he and his clones had already swept the battlefield of loot and corpses. Or he might’ve put it off way later and let the bodies go bad.

He formed a clone to join Cenric’s side at the inner edge of the hidden camp lair. Shady hovered above while staying inside the lair.

Joey had already dismissed Big Angry. The Immortal Man Whale wasn’t one for waiting around.

While Shady, Cenric, and a shadow clone continued their watch for oncoming enemies, Joey let himself relax further into his wife’s care.

His mind drifted toward all that they’d gained from slaying three demon gallery hostesses and their one hundred monsters.

Loot drops came first:

“What a damn good haul,” Joey murmured, melting under his wife’s massaging care. “Compared to how many resources we used in the battle, this is incredible.”

Maylolee’s voice passed through his ears with a purr. “I agree, husband. I used one essence scroll and one stamina scroll in battle. I even used the crystal webbing scroll to entangle a few centaurs. It was out of curiosity. It was surprisingly effective.”

“The driders are way too skittish to use their own crowd-controlling powers to their advantage,” Joey said.

“I believe they’re more ambush monsters than frontal confrontation monsters.”

“Makes sense.” Joey sighed. “Too bad not all the loot was recoverable, though. It’s just like last time. But now it’s more blatant.”

Dozens of the crystal cavalry glaives had disintegrated once the centaurs fell in battle. The same had happened to most of the large crystal clubs. Except for one that remained after Joey and Maylolee had slain all the ogres.

This had to be the system’s way of controlling the flow of loot drops.

It seemed like they had a lot now. But Joey and Maylolee would have gathered more if everything had fallen to the floor without disintegrating.

This would explain why they had collected none of the blue wooden clubs from the male mini-giants.
