Nine:

“Dylan, perhapse now is a good time to go!”

Kim stated in a manic tone. I frowned, as I looked over my shoulder. I’d been sitting with the fae kitten for hours beyond count, and Carolyn had long since begged off to go sleep.

“What’s going on?”

I asked her, catching the panic in her voice. Kim’s lip quivered.

“They know you’re here! They want you!”

She said in a hurry, and I frowned at her.

“Kim, use more descriptive language, please. Who is here, and what the hell do they want with me?”

I insisted of her in a calm tone, and she lip her quivering lip.

“The rebel pack, they want you. Because you’re her daughter.”

She said, as if this explained everything. I was a born royal; I could fill in the blanks with my logic. The her was likely my mother, Aurelia, and the why must be, because I am part of the legitimate family in power. Though, I’d not heard a single rumor of a rebel pack inside the lycan populace.

“How is there a rebel pack I haven’t even heard about it?!”

I demanded of Kim, and she snapped back under the weight of my magiks and stammered, “They were formed after you killed her brother.”

She said, and I swore to myself. Julia had looked me in the eyes, and she’d managed to lie to me, despite her lycan nature. The art of deception usually eluded lycans, except, apparently, when one kills a kid brother in self-defense.

“Now that I think about it, my sister’s had a lot of random injuries on her form supposed challenges the past few days.”

Kim nodded and said, “Yes, to wear her down. They’ve been challenging her steadily. Liv didn’t even want to kill the challengers for a while. She only started killing them when she realized they weren’t going to stop.”

Kim informed me, and I swore to myself.

“Great, so everyone and their furry mother seems to know this, except me!”

Kim looked down and away, and she said, “We don’t speak of such things. This was played like a grievance between families, until suddenly, there was an entire pack of usurper wolves rising up.”

I sighed and growled, “What could they possibly hope to gain?! I highly doubt even the entire pack could take on mother! She’s a beast like nothing else in the wild!”

I stated, and Kim nodded vigorously.

“You are their goal, Dylan, and your sister. They want to destroy the legacy of Wildriver, as Julia’s brother was killed.”

I threw up my hands and exclaimed, “How was I supposed to know any of this?! He was a mindless beast going at me, while I had a power dampener on. I had to kill him! I barely broke the damn thing fast enough to impale him before he finished me off!”

I snapped, and Kim whimpered in pain, as my magiks rose around me.

“I don’t doubt you or your intentions. I have seen how gentle you are and how much you respect life, Dylan. However, please, we must hurry, before they raid my hospital, and possibly injure or kill wounded beings while looking for you.
