Connor

* * *

Where is she?

Two in the morning. Where could she have gone?

I’ve been searching the ship for hours. Gia left dinner, and Gracie practically yanked me out of my chair.

“Don’t lie to me, Connor. I know she’s the Gia who hurt you years ago.”

“Gracie, how many times do I need to tell you to drop it?”

“Tell me what happened.”

“Do you remember how you didn’t want anyone to know about what Kade did to you?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, I feel exactly how you did about Gia and me. So drop it.”

My comment only made Gracie angrier.

“So, she did something really awful to you?”

“Gracie,” I groaned. “Stop.”

“No. Why won’t you tell me?”

“I don’t want to talk about this, and I want you to be nice to her.”

“Why? She did something horrible to you.”

“Gracie, just stop.”

“You beat the crap out of Kade…in a hospital.”

“Yeah, and you were pissed at me for weeks.”

“I’m just pointing out why you should tell me.”

“Why? Are you going to try to hurt Gia?” I say it condescendingly, knowing Gracie wouldn’t physically hurt anyone.

At least, I don’t think she would.

Hmmm.

“Be nice to Gia and forget about all this,” I try to tell her again.

“She doesn’t deserve my kindness.”

“You don’t even know what happened. And yes, she does deserve it.”

“Tell me what she did.”

“No.”

“Well, I don’t need to be nice to her.”

“Yes, you do,” I sternly insist.

“No, I don’t.”

“Yes, you will!”

“Why?”

“Because I love her,” I yelled out.

Gracie’s eyes widened. “You love her.”

The darkness of the night sky is how my heart feels. There’s no brightness without Gia. “Yes. I love her.”

“Will you please tell me what she did?”

“No. And I forgave Kade, so I want you to be nice to Gia and drop this.”

“So we should call her Gia?”

“No. You call her Monica like everyone else.”

“Why?”

Somehow the thought only I call her Gia was some sort of comfort she was still mine even though she isn’t. “Because that is what you know her as.”

Gracie furrowed her brows at me. “So, everyone is going to call her Monica, and you’re going to call her Gia?”

I chuckled. “Yep.”

“Did those punches jostle your brain?”

“Maybe.”

Gracie shook her head.

“I’m serious. Be ridiculously nice to her. If you aren’t, I’m really going to be upset.”

She blew out air. “Fine.”

After our conversation, I was pulled into an arm wrestling tournament with Kade, Ryland, and Javier. The entire time I wanted to find Gia, but there was no getting out of it. It ended, and I was about to search for her when Chloe stopped me.

“Hey, you have a minute?”

“Sure, what’s up?”

“The men Beckett identified as your attackers and Gracie’s kidnappers we ran a search on. Carter sent the photos over. Can you tell me if they are the correct men?”

My heart raced. “Okay. Let me see?”

“My laptop is in my room. Come with me?”

“Sure.”

After I confirmed the men in the pictures, I wanted to know more, so I read the reports from the email. Chloe wasn’t going to let me at first, but in the end, she didn’t have a choice.
