Chapter Eight

Samurai

Ryo played with his toys until he literally passed out in the middle of the floor. He had a block clutched in one hand and a stuffed bear in the other. Grey managed to pry the block from his fingers, but he held tight to the bear. She placed him in his bed, and the kid didn’t wake even once while she wrestled his clothes off him, put on a pull-up, then dressed him in pajamas. She tucked him into bed before shutting out the light and putting the baby gate across the doorway.

I smoothed her hair back from her face as she stepped into the hall. “You look as tired as him.”

She nodded. “It’s been a long day. I woke up feeling so uncertain and scared. And I don’t blame you! I shouldn’t have shown up without any warning, much less dropped a baby bomb on you. When you mentioned birth control being in the contract, I should have spoken up then and there.”

I tensed. I’d assumed she hadn’t known about the change. What if she’d asked for it? “What do you mean?”

“I didn’t see that anywhere in my copy. I swear I didn’t.”

I tipped up her chin and forced her to hold my gaze. “Grey, are you trying to tell me you weren’t on anything that day? No IUD, pill, or shot? It was only you and me with no protection between us at all? And Knox didn’t say a word about my requirements?”

Her face paled and she sank her teeth into her bottom lip. “I was scared of what would happen if I said anything. I didn’t know if I’d missed it when I signed the document, and if you’d taken the money away, I’d have lost everything, possibly even my son.”

My stomach churned at the implication. I grabbed her hand and led her to the bedroom. Opening my top dresser drawer, I pulled out my copy of the contract with Knox. I’d looked earlier and realized that clause had been left out. What else had I missed? I needed to know if someone at the Pleasure Emporium had fucked up and given us an older version, or if they’d done it on purpose… and I wanted to know why. If Grey had never known about the birth control stipulation, then Knox had kept it to himself from the beginning.

“Jin, are you mad at me?” Grey asked, her voice nearly a whisper. I’d released her to get the file and saw she’d wrapped her arms around herself, as if to protect her from whatever I’d say.

“No, beautiful. I’m not mad at you. Someone at the Pleasure Emporium gave us the wrong contract to sign. I didn’t think to read over it carefully a second time. I should have.”

“Is there anything else in there we don’t know about?” she asked.

I went to the bed and sat on the edge. Grey joined me and we read over the document, word for word, making sure we both understood everything the same way.
