Ellie ran her finger over the last line of her notebook entry. That was it!

“I think someone used the cogwheel to steal the jellyfish!” Ellie exclaimed. “We just have to figure out who.” She turned her attention to the footprints. “These turn and go toward the forest. I bet if we follow them, we can find the jellyfish thief.”

Chapter Nine

Cabin in the Woods

Ellie, Tink, and Fez followed the giant footsteps to an old cabin not too far into the woods. All three of them stood at the warped wood door, bugs crawling about the nooks and crannies. Ellie watched a spider scurry by, plucked it off, and popped it in her mouth.

CRUNCH! CRUNCH!

“That will never not gross me out,” Tink said with a gag. They peered into a window beside the door, but there were no lights, and the window was caked with filth. They couldn’t see anything.

CREAK! Fez had his hand on the door, and both Ellie and Tink shushed him at the same time.

“Sorry,” Fez whispered. “But the door wasn’t even shut.” After one last look in the dirty window, they decided to go in. The floorboards squeaked and creaked as they tiptoed through the door into the small one-room cabin. They shone their flashlights around to find furniture covered in white sheets that had turned grey from filth and shelves of books covered in layers of thick dust. The air felt heavy with the stench of molded wood and mothballs.

“Looks like it’s abandoned,” Tink whispered. A brown rat ran across the floor with a small squeak. “Well, almost abandoned.”

“It’s so cute!” Fez declared, trying to find exactly where it had run to.

Ellie shuddered as the critter scurried under the desk in the corner. She had an urge to bolt out of the cabin, but she knew they needed to solve this mystery to save Jellyfish Lake. She picked up an old magnifying glass off a small wooden table and blew the dust off. She raised it to her face and squinted at the room through the lens. She loved how big everything appeared through a magnifying glass. The rat ran to the other side of the room, and it looked like a giant monster, making Ellie jump.
