July

For the first time in club history, the MLB All-Star Week is taking place in Nashville. Since the guys skipped out on the festivities for Robby and Carina’s wedding last year, they’re excited to enjoy it at home. It’s an exciting week for everyone.

Earlier this week, Georgie played in the celebrity softball tournament, where I met Xavier Jackson, one of Macy’s clients and shooting guard for Los Angeles Condors. My dad practically fainted when I sent him a selfie of us together. As a Midwestern girl, a love for basketball is in my blood. It doesn’t hurt that Xavier has pythons for arms.

We also watched Ryan, a friend from Nashville’s minor league team, play in the All-Star Futures game. And last night, Miller narrowly lost the Homerun Derby to a player from Miami. We’re all hanging out in the team’s suite tonight as we cheer on Kent and Robby in the All-Star Game.

I am both excited and nervous about watching Kent play. Things have been going great between us lately, but we are still on the DL. Every time I cheer for him, I can’t shake the feeling that people are wondering why. But that’s my paranoia talking.

As Kent’s team returns to the dugout, a small Asian woman settles beside me. “He’s good, isn’t he?” she asks, nodding to Kent, taking practice swings while he is on deck.

“He is.” When I take her in, I notice she shares Kent’s warm chocolate eyes and bright smile. “Are you his mother?”

“I am,” she beams. “Are you a friend of his?” The once-over she gives makes me squirm inside, but I try to maintain my composure.

“Yes! I went to high school with Lola, who is Miller’s wife,” I explain, pointing to my friend, who is currently covering a hotdog with questionable toppings. “I didn’t know you’d be in town for this.”

“Of course. I couldn’t let my boy play in such a big game without someone cheering for him from the stands. I know many people are wishing him well, but it isn’t the same when they are a fan.” I nod in understanding.

Her gaze once again rakes over me and my generic Songbirds shirt tied at in a knot above my red midi skirt. “A pretty girl like you must have your eye on a certain player, no?”

“Oh, no, ma’am. I’m just here to support my friends.”

“That’s a shame,” she chides. “My son is single, you know. He may be a little wild, but a knockout like you would have no trouble taming him. Ariel was always his favorite princess. “

I choke on my drink at her admission. My mind quickly flashes back to our Fuck, Marry, Kill game on the way to Vegas. He always chose to marry the Little Mermaid. A hand on my back pulls me out of the memory.

“Clara, you’re here!” Tiffany says to my conversation partner.

“Hello, my dear,” Clara replies. “If only this one could have fallen for my son. They would make such cute babies.”

“You know he’s more of a brother to me, Mama C.
