I swallow. I hope the caps locks were stuck and not intentional.

And I hope he likes me enough to think I’m good enough for his daughter.

Chapter 8

Connor

“You fucked up.” Oscar blows out an exasperated breath that lasts forever. I wait for him to continue, but he shrugs his shoulders. “Why the fuck did you go public before talking to her dad?”

I let out a sigh and choose to stay silent.

“Do you know his reputation? Do you know he gets rid of hockey players who are not performing without blinking an eye? And you’re fucking messing around with his daughter.”

“I perform. Scoring goals is my specialty, and I’m the stand in captain and one day I will be the captain of this team.”

“Keep telling yourself that. Nobody is indispensable. Especially if that player...”

“Okay. Okay. I get it.” I wipe my forehead when a cold sweat breaks across it. “But I’m safe.” I’m not sure if I’m reassuring Oscar or me.

“On your head, be it,” Oscar says. “So unless you went out and bought her engagement and you’re going to kneel in front of him and ask for his daughter’s hand, I suggest you think long and hard about what you’re going to say to smooth things over. ”

I sigh as I turn off the car and open the door. Cool New York air rushes of over my heated skin as I grab my duffel, throw it over my shoulder, and stride across the parking lot to the rink.

I understand Coach Hawthorn will want to protect his daughter, but he needs to know how I feel before he throws the book at me.

“How do you feel about her?” Oscar asks after a moment of silence.

Can I tell my team that I’d fallen in love with Piper? If I can’t tell him, then maybe I don’t deserve her. “I love her.”

“You’ve known her for less than a week.” Oscar’s hot breath mingles with the cold air, causing steam to envelop him.

“Is there a certain amount of time that is acceptable before I can feel the way I feel?”

“I don’t... It’s just you’ve never talked like that about anyone before now,” Oscar mutters.

“I know, but it was the first time that someone made my skin burn. I have fucking tingles running down my spine just thinking about her.”

“Shit man! That’s fucking deep.”

I side eye Oscar because he’s the same. He’d give up everything for his childhood best friend, despite his protestations.

“It is, and I’m not letting anyone stand in my way.” The words leave my mouth and my back stiffens with steely determination.

At the end of the parking lot, I pull on the handle and yank open the door, and rush down the corridor to the locker room.

I dump my duffel and check the time on the clock on the wall. 7.55 am.

I sigh.

“You okay?” Nate says as he pulls his sweater over his body armor.

I lifted one shoulder and let it fall. Not wanting too many people to know. Not that it’s going to take long for the rest of the team to work out what is happening.
