Chapter 35

“Hello?” Halle called out, pushing on the swinging doors to the kitchen. Timidly, she peered into the silent room. She thought for sure the kitchen would be full of people prepping food, with dinner less than two hours away. The thought of running into Mr. Rivero, or his wife, alone hadn’t occurred to her until she saw the empty room. “Anyone here?”

Halle headed toward the far wall, eyeing the bank of drawers to the left of the oven. An industrial-size cling wrap sat on the stainless steel counter. Storage bags would have to be kept in the same area, wouldn’t they, she hoped? Halle nervously cracked the knuckles on her left hand.

“You can’t serve that!” she heard a woman yell.

“Like hell I can’t!” came the reply.

Halle’s breath caught in the back of her throat. “Crap, crap, crap, crap,” she chanted, wishing she could find what Mrs. Middleton wanted someplace else on campus.

Quickly, she pulled open the top drawer: tinfoil, parchment paper, Saran wrap.

Lola pushed through the insulated doors separating the kitchen from the enormous walk-in refrigerator at the back of the room, a tray of frozen potato wedges in her arms.

“What do you want,” she snapped, spotting Halle. “You aren’t allowed in here. Get out.”

“Um, sorry. Mrs. Middleton, the school librarian, sent me down here to grab a couple of small plastic bags for her.”

Lola set down the tray. “Well, you’re looking in the wrong spot,” she barked, placing her right hand on her hip.

“Get your ass back here, Lola. I’m not done talking to you.”

“Hold your horses, Ramon. We got company.”

Ramon stomped into the kitchen. His cool gaze turned to Halle, making the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. “What the hell do you want, kid?”

Halle’s voice hitched. “Plastic sandwich bags, please.”

Ramon pointed a beefy finger toward the long stainless steel prep counter. “Under there.”

“Thank you.”

“In the plastic tub on top.”

Halle nodded, removing the lid to the Rubbermaid bin.

“Grab what you need,” Lola said, noticing the girl’s hesitation.

Halle took in the contents of the three-by-two-foot container. There were several different sizes of resealable bags, but she stopped and stared when the thin box of waxed sandwich bags caught her eye.

“Jesus,” Lola hissed impatiently, storming over to where Halle stood. “There’re right here. You blind? How many do you need?”

Halle quickly grabbed several of the smaller bags, then one waxed.

“What do you want them for again?”

“Paper clips,” Halle said, backing away. “Thank you.”
