SEAN WAS halfway through Baby Driver, and texting Billy another effusive thank-you for streaming all his favorite movies, when there was a knock at his door.
It took him a minute to get up and answer it, and he chided himself for growing used to Billy waiting on him at the same time he wished Billy were there now. It didnât matter what people were sellingâcleaning products, magazines, religionâBillyâs acid tongue and give-no-fucks attitude usually had them hauling ass to another neighborhood in one or two sentences, and Sean really envied that ability sometimes.
He especially envied that ability when he opened the door and saw Jesse standing there.
God, that man was still good-looking.
Tall, with salt-and-pepper temples, Jesse was one of those men who proved that whiskey and steak werenât the only things that could get tastier with age.
But that didnât mean Seanâs mouth watered when he saw who was standing on his porch.
âWhat?â he asked, eyes narrow and expression flat and unfriendly.
âHey,â Jesse said, giving a sort of sheepish smile and jiggling the grocery bag in his hand. âI, uh, realized that, uh, I maybe confused some of your movies with mine when I left. I thought Iâd bring them back.â
Sean grabbed the bag from Jesse and realized that, in addition to two DVDs when Sean knew Jesse had taken at least ten, there was also a six-pack of beer, a quart of Jack Daniels, and a box of lubricated condoms.
âFuck off,â he said, shoving the bag into Jesseâs chest before backing up and slamming the door.
Jesse stopped him with a booted foot between the door and the frame.
âCome on, Sean,â he said, his voice low and smooth. âYou know it doesnât have to mean anything. You, me, some good timesââ
âIâm still on pain meds, you insensitive fuckhead,â Sean snapped, although mostly it was ibuprofen, but Jesse didnât know that. âAnd no âgood timeâ with you is worth the shitty emotional hangover. Now move your foot before Iââ
âWhat?â Jesse taunted. âCall the cops?â Behind him, the trees rustled in a particularly vicious burst of wind, and Seanâs next breath was a little rustier. Damp airâgoddammit, it sucked when everything your mother said about âYouâre gonna catch your deathâ was right.
Sean growled. âYou think itâs the cops you should be worried about?â He held up his phone, which had Billy set to speed dial. âOne touch of this button and Iâve got five bored porn stars here on my doorstep, ready to come take pictures with you and post them to the internet. Think carefully, Jesse. Is your dick today really worth your reputation as a straight man tomorrow?â
âSean,â Jesse wheedled, but heâd straightened his posture, which demanded him pulling his foot out of the door, which was all Sean needed.
He slammed the door in Jesseâs face and slid the deadbolt home. He heard a frustrated crash of glass against his door as he stalked to the couch and tried not to groan. Fuck. He needed to clean that up before Billy got home.
