CHAPTER ELEVEN

It was hot. It was also Augusta, Georgia, which Darrell knew full well was hot ninety percent of the year. Okay, maybe only eighty percent, but still– enough. He threw off the picnic blanket he and Amy had managed to wrap themselves in after they’d fallen asleep in the park and carefully pulled himself out of her arms entwined about him. Pushing himself off the grass, Darrell wiped his palms on his pants and vaulted into the bed of his truck. He let his legs dangle off the end, almost brushing the earth, and looked up at the stars.

He hadn’t stopped thinking about Everly since she’d disappeared. The police and even Meredith kept telling him that she had just run away, that she must have been high on something when she ripped the cop’s heart out, and that they were putting as many resources as they could towards finding her. No matter how much he protested that Everly had not been high on anything, let alone something that would cause her to do that, the cops remained unconvinced. His mother had always liked Everly and seemed less certain of her guilt, especially when the police couldn’t explain how one tiny girl had managed to steal the cop’s gun, fire it– though apparently not at him– and then overpower the man well over twice her size. That wasn’t even counting how she’d ripped out his heart with no apparent weapon.

Still, when Darrell saw his mom, she wasn’t a bundle of help. It was a shame about Everly, she said, and she hoped she wouldn’t get herself into any more trouble, but if the police caught her, they’d convict her for sure. She had a prior record, after all. If there had just been someone to tell about the dymoni and how he knew those things had gotten Everly, maybe taken her somewhere that she was still alive– but anyone he told would just think he was crazy, and so he said nothing. He’d run out of his sister’s money about a week after Everly disappeared from the jail– he’d had to go home then, though his search efforts had been utterly futile up to that point, mostly consisting of him driving up and down the interstate looking for threatening shadows.

Now, he went outside every night the sky was not swarmed with clouds and looked up at the stars. He couldn’t have said why if anyone had asked him, other than he knew Everly did the same as often as she could. Maybe he was trying to feel close to her, or communicate with her telepathically, or maybe he just wanted to believe that she was alive and all right somewhere, even if it was far away.

Amy stirred on the blanket, and Darrell ran his fingers through his hair. Amy Chermaine had been so apologetic when he’d gotten back to Augusta, saying how sorry she was about Everly and that she hadn’t meant those things she’d said– she’d just been caught off guard in front of her friends– that he’d decided to give her another try.
