“Who cares about them? I’m not exactly surprised, Liv. Are you?”

Liv paced around outside the cabin, her phone pressed to her ear as she talked to her sister. She had managed to finish the day thanks to Hannah and Robyn, who had told her that she could quit if she wanted to, but that it was a dumb idea to do it because of a few friends. While Liv avoided the cabana all day, the trio did seek her out and say goodbye to her before they left, leaving Robyn and Hannah to tell Liv that in their opinions Liv’s friends were just clueless when it came to Liv’s situation because they all came from money, and were rich. They didn’t understand what it was like to be in Liv’s shoes.

“I didn’t expect them to act so, I don’t know, uncaring? It’s almost like they’re bored talking about it, so they just don’t, like I am overexaggerating my situation. I don’t know Eliza, it’s hard for me to explain but I guess I was caught off guard when I felt like I wanted to cry. I thought I would be angry, not weepy.”

“From what you said it sounds like they still want to be friends, Liv. You said they have been asking you to go out with them, that you’re still in the group text.”

“Go out to expensive dinners, or shopping at places that I can’t even afford gas to go to. Oh wait, I don’t need gas because I don’t even have a car anymore.”

“Liv, they blow into town for three months a year. That’s it. The rest of the nine months they live in different states, and you don’t even see each other, and maybe text a few times or have a few calls. Then when summer rolls around you’re inseparable again until September comes. That’s not a close friendship, Liv. You see Peggy at the Post Office more than those three, for crying out loud.”

Liv sighed heavily, she knew Eliza would be blunt and it was what Liv had needed to hear. Maybe they weren’t the problem, maybe she was. She expected too much from them.

They weren’t ever her tribe to begin with, she had just never realized it because Dane had always been there for her.
