Chapter 19

Rachel

My mind was overwhelmed with fear due to the coven’s presence at the party. I also felt confused about the fact that I had fallen on the dance floor. I was a pretty sure-footed woman, and it would take more than high heels to make me fall.

I thought maybe I hadn’t fed enough yesterday and was getting sick again. The sensation of Andrei’s cool fingers on my neck broke my thoughts, and I looked up at him again, my brows knitting together in anger.

“Answer the question, Andrei,” I hissed, the music now covering our voices from potential eavesdroppers.

The fury in my face and tone only made Andrei smile a little. “You can relax, love. The Black Onyx isn’t here to kill you. They only want to speak with you about something important.”

“Yeah, right. They’re not here to kill me,” I said sarcastically. “Did you forget they sent a man with a sword to cut my head off? What could they possibly have to tell me?”

“Tony’s here, if that makes a difference,” he replied, ignoring my question.

He had to have known that his playful tone about Tony’s presence would pull at my heart and distract me from being pissed at him for hiding something.

“They’re waiting for us,” he added. “Once we’re finished, we can sneak out the back.”

I narrowed my eyes at the sudden shift in Andrei’s demeanor. His voice came out more authoritative than I thought he meant. However, his words were slightly hesitant, as if he wanted to bark the order but held back; instead, he acted calm and collected.

Something is wrong.

Ever since we met, he had been a controlling asshole, but the softened tone told me something more serious was happening … and it wasn’t good.

Before I could bite out my response, Andrei gripped my hand, leading me across the dance floor to the meeting room he had disappeared into earlier. My heart was pounding so loudly in my ears that I felt I had lost my hearing. After we stepped inside and Andrei shut the door, I cast my eyes around the room. It wasn’t only Gerald present, but the entire coven stood behind him. Even Helen, the one who had contacted Tony about having him kill me, was there, regarding me with a calm and somewhat dismissive expression. All the witches seemed to bear the same look at my presence in the room. I hadn’t seen them in over twenty years, but I recognized several of them. Some I had never met. Each member of the coven was a direct descendant of the founding witches, and they all wore thick red cloaks fastened with a black and gold lapel pin shaped like a pentagram.

When I was growing up, the coven’s behavior was far different from how it is now. In modern times, the coven reminded me of a weird cult with particular laws, codes, and rituals to keep order within their ranks. It no longer felt like they were protecting their kind or doing what was best for everyone.
