Proboscidactyla ornata

The medusa of Proboscidactyla ornata is, as its name suggests, ornate. Most hydromedusae have relatively straight radial canals, or internal vessels that shuttle nutrients and waste between the stomach and the tentacles, muscles, and sensory organs on the outer periphery of the body. But in P. ornata, these canals branch a few times, with each branch connecting to a tentacle along the margin of the body. The clonal polyp stage of P. ornata is a funny little organism, as the two tentacles sticking up from the slender body give it the appearance of an orchestra conductor. Proboscidactyla ornata may be seasonally common enough to become an irritant to marine life, but it does not appear to be harmful to people.
