Eleven

Watching Matt and Duchess disappearing into the darkness outside gave Lacy an overwhelming sense of dread. Nausea swirled in her belly. She felt acutely vulnerable and alone, but forced herself to push aside her emotions in order to check on Rory.

The baby was sleeping. She watched him for a moment. Her instincts were to lift him up and wrap him against her body with the shawl, the way she had the night she’d escaped from Jill’s. But doing that would risk waking him up, so she hesitated and considered her options.

What she needed was some sort of weapon.

She quickly returned to the main living space, sweeping her gaze over the area. A kitchen knife? She wrinkled her nose. The attacker would have to get close for it to be of use.

One of the split logs? Too bulky.

Fireplace poker? She picked it up, testing the weight in her hand. Long enough to keep the intruder at arm’s length, but not very heavy.

Since there wasn’t anything better, she took the poker into the bedroom and stood protectively over Rory. Then she decided it would be best for Rory to be positioned well out of sight, so she slid the dresser drawer beneath the edge of the bed frame so he was completely protected, just in case whoever was lurking around outside managed to get past her.

Satisfied the baby was as safe as possible, she crossed over and stood near the doorway, her left side pressed against the wall, the fireplace poker resting on her right shoulder like a baseball bat.

Oppressive silence pressed against her chest, and every muscle in her body was tense. She silently prayed for strength and courage, hoping Matt was right and that God would watch over them. Especially an innocent baby like Rory.

A sense of calm nudged her fear aside. She would defend Rory, no matter what it took. No one would harm him, not while she was alive and kicking. If anyone but Matt or his brother came through the doorway, she would be ready.

The faint sound of Duchess barking reached her ears, causing her to hold her breath and listen carefully. Was that a good sign or a bad one? She didn’t know, but hoped it meant Duchess had found the intruder’s scent and was right now tracking him down.

A loud bang echoed through the night and she startled badly, gasping in horror. A gunshot? Was Matt the one shooting, or was it possible either he or Duchess had been the target?

And how had their location here at this remote cabin been found? The only call they’d made besides to Matt’s brothers was to his boss.

Silence filled the cabin again, and she tried not to imagine Matt or Duchess lying on the ground bleeding. She swallowed hard, trying to decide what she should do. Matt had told her to stay here, but if he or Duchess were in trouble, shouldn’t she take Rory and make a run for the SUV?

Or better yet, she needed to call 911 using the disposable phone.
